Arthrophyta
Les prêles (Sphenophyta synonyme de Equisetophyta, Équisétinées ou Arthrophyta, Articulées) forment une division ou sous-division des végétaux vasculaires (Tracheobionta lato sensu, paraphylétique).
Elles ne contiennent qu'une seule classe Equisetopsida qui était classiquement incluse dans l’embranchement paraphylétique des fougères lato sensu ou ptéridophytes (Pteridophyta).
Seul le genre Equisetum a survécu, mais au moins trois ordres et quatre familles d'espèces éteintes sont connues.
Les prêles sont apparues au Dévonien avec une diversité très importante au Carbonifère. Pendant cette période, plusieurs ordres étaient représentés comme les Calamites (forme arborescente) mais aujourd'hui, les prêles ne comprennent plus qu'une quinzaine d'espèces réparties en un seul genre.

Equisetum is a genus of vascular plants that reproduce by spores rather than seeds. The genus includes 15 species commonly known as horsetails and scouring rushes. It is the only living genus in class Equisetopsida, formerly of the division Equisetophyta (Arthrophyta in older works), though recent molecular analyses place the genus within the ferns (Pteridophyta).Other classes and orders of Equisetopsida areknown from the fossil record, where they were important members of the world flora during the Carboniferous period.The spores are borne under sporangiophores in cone-like structures (strobilus, pl. strobili) at the tips of some of the stems. In many species the cone-bearing stems are unbranched, and in some (e.g. E. arvense) they are non-photosynthetic, produced early in spring separately from photosynthetic sterile stems. In some other species (e.g. E. palustre) they are very similar to sterile stems, photosynthetic and with whorls of branches. Horsetails are mostly homosporous, though in E. arvense, smaller spores give rise to male prothalli. The spores have four elaters that act as moisture-sensitive springs, assisting spore dispersal after the sporangia have split open longitudinally. Equisetum arvense, commonly known as the Field Horsetail or Common Horsetail, is a rather bushy perennial with a rhizomatous stem formation native to the northern hemisphere. These horsetails may have sterile or fertile stems. Sterile stems start to grow after the fertile stems have wilted. The sterile stems tend to be much taller and bushier, with the jointed segments being around one inch (2.5 cm) long with a diameter of about 1/20th of an inch (1 mm). These segments contain one set of whorled, slender, erect branches each. Some stems can have as many as 20 segments and be as tall as 2-24 inches (5–60 cm). The fertile stems tend to be half as tall as the sterile stems and also tend to be more succulent.
